Well marked spalted Beech bowl retaining the natural edge of the bark sourced from Wisley RHS Garden.
Decorative reinforcing has been used to strengthen the bowl
Spalting is a term used to describe the markings left after dead wood has become colonised by two main fungi. It is part of the process which ends with total rotting. The secret is to stop the process when the markings are at their best and the wood is still fairly hard.
All my products are boiled to kill the fungi and to soften the lignin fibres which reduces splitting of the wood as it dries. Lastly they are coated with Danish oil for long wear, hardening and polishing of the surface.
Suitable for general decorative use. Can also be used for sweets and dry items such as nuts. Unsuitable for salads or culinary purposes. Can be re-polished with wax.
